Itinerary
DAY 1: FRANKFURT - BUCHAREST
Arrival at Bucharest Otopeni airport . Reception by the Romanian tour guide and transfer to the hotel. In the evening a festive meal in the “Pescarus” restaurant.
DAY 2: BUCHAREST - SIBIU
In the morning drive via Pitesti to Curtea de Arges . Visit to the Arges monastery , which was built in the Moorish style. Drive towards Transylvania . On the way, a short stop at the Cozia monastery (14th century), one of the oldest monasteries in Romania. Then continue through the Red Tower Pass to Sibiu.
DAY 3: FORTIFIED CHURCHES
In the morning drive north to the Kokeltal . First stop at the fortified church of Axente Sever . Then visit the Margaret Church from Medias, with the largest winged altar in Romania. Then drive to Sighisoara . Here you can visit the Clock Tower , the house where Dracula was born and the Church on the Hill. In the afternoon, a short stop at the largest Saxon fortified church in Romania in Biertan. Until the end of the 19th century, this was the seat of the Protestant bishops of Transylvania. In the evening wine tasting and festive dinner in the restaurant “Butoiul de Aur” in Sibiu.
DAY 4: SIBIU
Morning sightseeing in Sibiu. In the old town you can visit the Great and Small Ring and the Bridge of Lies . Then visit the Protestant parish church , seat of the bishops, in which the son of Dracula, Mihnea the Evil, was buried. Then visit the village museum near Sibiu. In the evening drive to Sibiel , visit the glass icon museum and then dinner at home with the mountain farmers .
DAY 5: SIBIU - BAIA MARE
In the morning drive west to Sebes . Visit of the Gothic church and the Student tower . Short stop in Alba Iulia. Visit to the 13th century cathedral (seat of the Catholic Bishop of Transylvania) and the old fortress, built by Eugene of Savoy. Afternoon city tour in Cluj Napoca . Visit to St. Michael's Church and the statue of Mathias Corvinus (one of the greatest Hungarian kings). Arrival in Baia Mare in the evening .
DAY 6: BAIA MARE - CIMPULUNG MOLDOVENESC
In the morning drive north to the Ukrainian border in Sapanta and visit the “Merry Cemetery”. There is a funny poem about the deceased on every tombstone. Then drive through the Iza valley towards the Bucovina . On the way the wooden churches from Ieud , Rozavlea and Bogdan Voda are visited. In the afternoon drive over the Prislop Pass , in the Eastern Carpathians, to the northern part of the Moldova .
DAY 7: MONASTERY TOUR
In the morning drive to the Moldovita Monastery, one of the monasteries that are world-famous for their exterior wall paintings. The symbols of the Orthodox faith are presented by the nuns. Drive over Obcina Mountain to Sucevita Monastery . On the exterior wall paintings, scenes from the Bible as well as from the history of the Romanian people can be seen. Then drive to the ceramic center in Marginea . Black ceramics are still fired here using the old technique. In the afternoon visit to the “Sistine Chapel” of Romania, the Voronet monastery . Here you can admire a beautiful representation of the “Last Judgment”.
DAY 8: CIMPULUNG MOLDOVENESC - PIATRA NEAMT
In the morning drive south. First stop at Neamt Monastery . This was founded by Prince Stefan the Great in the 15th century. Then drive to the monasteries of Agapia and Varatec . These are among the largest in Europe, each with over 1000 nuns and novices. In these monasteries you can visit the workshops and their museums. Arrival in Piatra Neamt in the afternoon . Short city tour with a visit to St. John's Church , which was founded by Prince Stefan the Great.
DAY 9: PIATRA NEAMT - TULCEA
In the morning drive through the southern part of the Moldova, a very rich wine-growing region, towards Galati, the largest port on the Danube. From here then take the ferry across the Danube to Dobrogea. Continue along the Danube to Tulcea , the “gate” of the Danube Delta.
DAY 10: DANUBE DELTA
In the morning we take the boat to the Danube Delta, through the main Sulina canal, to the canal of mile 36. From here through the old Danube to the pelican reserve of Lake Fortuna . Warm lunch on board (included). In the afternoon drive past Lake Nebunu back to Tulcea .
DAY 11: TULCEA - PREDEAL
In the morning drive back west, over the Danube to Wallachia and through the Prahova valley to Predeal. In the evening festive dinner with folklore music in the “Romanesc” restaurant in Predeal.
DAY 12: PREDEAL
In the morning drive to Brasov . City tour in Brasov with a visit to the Black Church (largest Gothic religious building from Eastern Europe), the old town hall and the small, hidden Orthodox church from the old town. Afternoon visit to the Saxon fortified churches from the northern part of Brasov. The fortified churches from Harman and Prejmer have for centuries defended Brasov from the raids of the Turks.
DAY 13: PREDEAL
In the morning in Sinaia visit to the Peles Castle. This was the summer residence of the Romanian royal family of the Hohenzollern. Then visit the Sinaia Monastery . Monks from the Sinai Peninsula built it in the 17th century. Afternoon visit to Bran Castle , also known as Dracula Castle.
DAY 14: PREDEAL - BUCHAREST - FRANKFURT
In the morning drive towards Bucharest . City tour in Bucharest, transfer to the airport, farewell to the Romanian tour guide and flight home
